Overview

Tax Justice Network Africa endorses the objectives of the Addis Tax Initiative (ATI) and has joined the ATI as a supporting organisation in May 2021.

TJNA is a pan-African research and advocacy organisation established in 2007 with a vision to see a new Africa where tax justice prevails and ensures an equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development. TJNA is focused on its mission of spearheading tax justice in Africa’s development by enabling citizens and institutions to promote equitable tax systems through research, capacity-building, and policy-influencing.

TJNA collaborates closely with its member organisations and other civil society partners across Africa to curb illicit financial flows (IFFs) and promote progressive taxation systems. It also advocates for pro-poor tax policies and the strengthening of tax systems to promote domestic revenue mobilization (DRM).

As part of its outreach programmes, TJNA launched the African Parliamentary Network on IFFs and Taxation (APNIFFT) in 2015. The platform provides African legislators the opportunity to undertake advocacy, dialogue, and debate in a simplified manner on IFFs, tax governance and DRM in Africa. Additionally, TJNA organises the African Media Training with the aim of improving the understanding and the capacity of African media practitioners to adequately report on tax, IFFs, tax justice, and their linkages to the broader structural transformation of African economies. Furthermore, TJNA  organises the International Tax Justice Academy (ITJA), a week-long capacity building programme established in 2016 to provide skills for sustained advocacy, dialogue, and debate through courses on IFFs, tax governance, and DRM in Africa.

TJNA publishes regular reports on topical issues within the financing for development space and has contributed to some activities of the ATI, for example, a coffee break where the Fair Tax Monitor, a tool jointly developed by Tax Justice Network Africa, and Oxfam, was presented.
