ATI Environmental Taxation Workshop Series - 1st Meeting

Environmental taxes beyond carbon in ATI partner countries

Learn more about the ATI environmental taxation workshop series here.

The ATI is organising its first Workshop Series on Environmental Taxation and Related Instruments.

Countries world-wide, particularly low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), face ever-increasing challenges related to climate change and biodiversity loss. Environmental taxation and related instruments provide a double function in addressing these challenges:  By incorporating the true costs of ecological harm into economic decisions, sustainability is promoted while environmentally harmful activities are disincentivised. At the same time, the revenue generated from environmental taxes offers a valuable opportunity for financing critical development initiatives, such as climate change adaptation measures.

While carbon pricing initiatives like carbon taxes have been gaining traction in recent years, other environmental challenges that extend beyond greenhouse gas emissions, such as deforestation, waste management, air and water pollution, etc., have gained less attention. The ATI workshop series will focus on environmental taxes other than carbon taxes.

The workshop aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Increased awareness and understanding of the principles, benefits, and challenges of environmental taxation among the participants.
  • Identification of potential environmental tax policies and measures that can be implemented in the participants' respective countries or regions.
  • Development of skills and knowledge on how to design, implement, and evaluate environmental tax policies and measures.
  • Establishment of peer-to-peer networks and partnerships among the participants and with experts in the field of environmental taxation.

The programme will be delivered via a virtual five-part workshop series. Sessions involving different methodologies, such as interactive discussions, buzz groups, brainstorms, presentations, and others will guide the participants through the different stages and elements of the policy cycle of environmental fiscal reforms.

The first session will take place on 30 October, 13:00-15:30 CET. Participation is exclusive to ATI members. In case of questions, kindly reach out to markus.paffhausen@taxcompact.net
